Solar Panel Cleaning: When It Helps and How to Do It Safely

Rain does most of the work on a tilted roof, but not all of it. Here is when cleaning is genuinely worth doing, how to do it safely from the ground, and why a clean panel still is not a serviced one.

Solar panels are built to handle Australia's harsh outdoor conditions, but that does not mean they stay clean forever.

Dust, bird droppings, leaves, pollen and other debris build up on the glass and block some sunlight. The effect varies by site, panel angle, weather and the type of soiling, but heavier or persistent build-up can reduce energy output.

Do Solar Panels Need Cleaning?

Yes, but not as often as many people think.

Most panels are installed at an angle, so rain washes away loose dust and dirt on its own. Rain will not remove everything though. Sticky grime, bird droppings, leaves and pollution can stay put and cut into efficiency.

Cleaning may be worthwhile if you notice:

  • Visible dirt or stains on the panels
  • Bird droppings covering multiple panels
  • Leaves or branches blocking sunlight
  • A drop in your system's energy production
  • Dust build-up after nearby construction work

If your system has been producing less electricity than usual without an obvious reason, dirty panels may be part of the problem, but they are rarely the whole story.

How Dirty Panels Affect Solar Performance

Solar panels work by capturing sunlight and converting it into electricity. When dirt or debris shades part of a module, less light reaches the cells.

The size of the loss varies with the amount, location and type of soiling. A light dusty film may have almost no effect, while stubborn or uneven deposits can cause a noticeable reduction, particularly when they sit across one part of a string.

Keeping panels reasonably clear of persistent soiling helps the system run closer to its expected output. It will not fix electrical faults, changing shade or inverter problems.

How to Clean Solar Panels Safely

If your panels are easy to reach and can be cleaned safely from the ground or a stable platform, you may be able to remove light dirt yourself.

  1. Shut the system down using the procedure in your manual before you start. Note that panels still generate DC electricity in daylight even when the system is switched off, so never touch cables, connectors or enclosures.
  2. Use a long-handled, soft-bristled brush to remove loose debris you can reach from the ground.
  3. If needed, lightly rinse the panels with a normal garden hose from the ground.
  4. Use plain water unless the panel manufacturer specifically approves another cleaning method.
  5. Clean during a cooler part of the day to avoid thermal shock and streaking.
  6. Stop if you cannot reach the area safely, or if the dirt remains after gentle cleaning.

Avoid using:

  • Abrasive brushes, pads or powders
  • Pressure cleaners or high-pressure hoses
  • Harsh soaps, solvents or other chemicals
  • Metal scrapers, blades or sharp tools

These can scratch the protective glass or damage the panel surface, and high-pressure water can force its way past the seals into the panel itself.

Should You Clean Solar Panels Yourself?

Ground-mounted panels are generally easier and safer to clean. Roof-mounted systems are another story.

How Often Should Solar Panels Be Cleaned?

Some systems only need cleaning every year or two. Others need more regular attention depending on their surroundings. A quick visual check every few months is usually enough to tell which camp you are in.

You may need more frequent cleaning if your property is:

  • Near busy roads
  • Close to construction sites
  • Surrounded by large trees
  • In areas with lots of birds
  • Located near the coast where salt can accumulate

Professional Cleaning vs DIY

Both options have their place. DIY works well for light dirt on easily accessible panels. Professional cleaning is usually the better choice for larger systems or difficult roof access.

Professional services often include:

  • Safe roof access
  • Proper cleaning equipment
  • Inspection for visible damage
  • Removal of stubborn build-up
  • Reduced risk of damaging the system

Cleaning and servicing are different things. A solar service includes electrical testing, cabling and inverter checks, which need an appropriately licensed electrician. A panel can look spotless and still have a fault behind it.
